Equipment Losses in Operations Moduler and Hooper (1987-1988)

During Op Hooper and Modular the equipment losses were one Mirage, one spotter aircraft(see pic), three Olifant MBT’s and four Ratel’s(see pic) as well a number of vehicles damaged. The SADF and the SWATF (South West African Territorial Force) suffered other losses during this period, but these were taken in various operations against SWAPO terrorists and SWAPO facilities in southern Angola. Some of this fighting involved FAPLA elements. UNITA lost some 270 men killed in the southern fighting. FAPLA losses in the fighting which involved the South African forces supporting UNITA, had by 25 February amounted to over 7,000 killed. Equipment losses during this fighting included:

8 x MiG-23 and 4 x MiG-21's.

2 x Su-22 and 8 x Helicopters including Mi8 and Mi24 Hind Gunships.

94 x Tanks and 94 x BMP-1's.

64 x BTR-60's and 2 x BRDM-2s.

2 x BTS-4 tank transporters.

4 x M-46 130 mm guns and 11 x D-30 122 mm guns.

33 x BM-21's and 3 x BM-14's.

7 x SA-8 SAM systems, 5 x SA-13 SAM systems.

3 x SA-9 SAM systems and 33 x SA-14 and SA-16 man-portable SAMs.

1 x ZSU-23-4 SPAA and 20 x ZU-23-3 AA guns.

5 x Radar systems, 4 x Communications vehicles.

7 x TMM Bridging vehicles and 377 x logistic vehicles.

Minor equipment items lost included one Grad-1P single-122 mm rocket launcher (see remains in camp after being revved in pic below), three B-10 recoilless guns; two 120 mm, fourteen 82 mm and four 60 mm mortars and seven AGS-17 grenade launchers.
